Soul Food 003

Soul Food Radio 003 starts off with a nice remix of The Boogoos by Munich's own Dusty. He's not only running a great Label, Jazz And Milk Records, he's also recording some great Music on his own. The Boogoos are a collective of musicians from Munich and until now just a few of their tracks have been released, notably their Bubbles 7" on Tramp Records and their amazing version of Theme de YoYo on Perfect Toy.

Magic is taken from Robin Thicke's Something Else, his third solo album is a joyful and modern tribute to 70s soul.

Where is Remy Shand? This question has been asked countless times in the last few years. After releasing his first Grammy nominated album called The Way I Feel, the Canadian Soul singer disappeared from the scene. Apparently he's going through a nasty divorce, so hopefully there'll be a new album someday.

I don't think I have to introduce or present the 40 Winks to you. If you do not know their music, you need to check out Padmo and Weedy's releases, The Lucid Effect, Sound Puzzle and More Than Loops.

Taken from Flying Lotus' first release, a Beat Tape called July Heat, this is classic FlyLo material.

Hubert Daviz has been making some noise with his Beatnicks Tape 01 and his latest release called Sketches. Germany's Beatmakers are working hard to get some respect.

Although Jazzanova have been on the scene for over a decade, they only released two albums of their own material so far. In Between and Of All The Things have been critically acclaimed and their work as remixers is not bad either. On this track taken from the wonderful Of All The Things they team up with Little Brother's Phonte.

Released in 1994, Nas' Illmatic is one of the best Hip Hop albums ever. This is a great remix by the still underrated Large Professor released in 1994.

DJ Honda and Mos Def have worked together in 1998 for DJ Honda's HII album. Travellin' Man is probably the best track from that album and now they have worked together again on Arts Magnetic for DJ Honda's new album, HIV.

The Diamond District, a new Washington DC based group founded by Oddisee, have released their In The Ruff EP as a free Download a few months ago. The EP received positive feedback from all corners of the world and now it's being re-released as a full album on CD, Vinyl and Download.

Straighten It Out is taken from Mr. Chop's For Pete’s Sake album, his album of funky psychedelic jazz inspired by Pete Rock’s greatest beats.
With previous releases on Jazzman's Stark Reality label, Ape Records and his debut release for Now Again called Lightworlds, Mr. Chop is heading in the right direction.

The Poets Of Rhythm have been doing their own thing since the beginning of the 90's, releasing 45's on their own Hotpie And Candy Label in small quantities. Their first album was called Practice What You Preach and was released in 1994 and later re-released on Daptone. Their second album was released on Quannum but soon after the Weissenfeldt brothers, Jan and Max, began focussing on other styles than just plain funk.

Caesar Frazier was a studio organist back in the 70's who recorded for Prestige, Atlantic, Westbound and Eastbound. He recorded two excellent and underrated Funk albums, Hail Caesar and '75 and one excellent Soul album for Westbound. DJ Premier seems to like this song too, since he used two different parts.

The Ghetto Brothers started out as a gang founded in New York City's South Bronx in the late 1960s. After opening a show in 1964, they produced an album in 1971, called Ghetto Brothers Power-Fuerza. This track has been re-released on a 45 by the fantastic Truth And Soul label not long ago.

BBE have been releasing some great compilations with so much unreleased music, including The American Boogie Down compiled by Jerome Derradji. I had never heard any of the tracks on this compilation before and don't know much about the Artists either. All i can say is: check it out!

Ruby Andrews is a Chicago based singer who released many great tracks, including You Made A Believer Out Of Me which reached number 18 in the R&B charts and number 96 in the pop charts in 1969. Most of her tracks have been released on the Zodiac label and we're written and produced by the Detroit based Brothers Of Soul.

Soul Food 002

The second edition of the Soul Food Radio Show starts off with the most sampled drum break of all time. James Brown and/or Clyde Stubblefields drums have been the foundation of Hip Hop. The Funky Drummer gets the remix treatment by Japan's Nr. 1 Soul Brother Muro.

Gecko Turner is a truly unique artist from southern Spain, born and bred in Extremadura. His debut album called Guapapasea! combines Brazilian beats, reggae, funk, soul, jazz and all the musical styles he had always loved. This track was remixed by Quantic and is taken from Manipulado (Manipulated), which gathers all the previously released vinyl-only remixes on one album.

Staying in Spain, we have a track from Skymark's new album called The Sound Of Silence. Skymark also produced a track on Ghostface Killah's new Ghost Dini album. His soulful productions and mixes have been on constant rotation on my Ipod for a while now.

fLako is one of Germany's new generation of beatmakers making a lot of noise. His beat tape called First Spaceshit On The Moon features 30 minutes of amazing beat wizardry. On this one he takes Erykah Badu's Real Thing to a new level.

Guilty Simpson released a very solid album a few months ago, one of the better Stones Throw Hip Hop related releases. The original version was produced by Madlib and this is Oh No's version. You'll be the judge.

Who would've thought? After all the hype and 100 release dates, Raekwon's Cuban Linx II has been released a few weeks ago and so the wait is over. This track was produced by J Dilla and features Inspectah Deck, Method Man and Ghostface in rare form.

I know some people will kill me for playing this track that's why i won't say too much. J Dilla and Madlib...

One of the biggest surprises for me this year has been this track from Royce Da 5'9" featuring Busta Rhymes. Taken from Royce's new album called Street Hop this track is one of the best Hip Hop tracks i heard in a long time. Royce seems to be back on his feet and hungry for more.

The next two tracks are taken from the new movie called Black Dynamite. Unfortunately there's no release date for Black Dynamite in Europe, but hopefully there will be a dvd release in the near future. This remix features Buckshot and Sean Price rhyming over a Blaxploitation theme.

Adrian Younge wrote, composed and performed the Black Dynamite score armed with an arsenal of vintage equipment and instruments. Younge recorded the album in his fully analog home studio by night, while spending his days editing the film.

Monk Higgins is one of the lesser known Jazz players, although some of his tracks have been sampled in Hip Hop. Little Green Apples has been used by DJ Premier for the classic Code Of The Streets and is taken from the superb Extra Soul Perception album released in 1969.

Next up is a nice slice of Nigerian Funk. This track is taken from Peter King's Owo Mela album and has been unearthed by Gilles Peterson for his In Africa compilation.

The next two tracks have been featured on the excellent Because You're Funky compilation presented and compiled by The Rustler. The Dream Makers released just one track as a B-Side on The Dreamettes' That's Not Love 45 and the Creations Unlimited Crystal Illusion track was sampled by Madlib.

The 3 Pieces were a group from Washington D.C. and released just one album on Fantasy in 1975. A nice piece of Modern Soul produced by the prolific Donald Byrd.

Eddie Kendrick was the co-founder of The Temptations, before moving on at the beginning of the 1970's to record as a solo artist. His 1972 album People... Hold On was a cornerstone featuring Keep On Truckin', a #1 pop hit in 1973.

Soul Food 001

This is a new beginning, think of it as Soul Food version 2.0. Instead of just bringing you a playlist, we've decided to make this a proper radio show. So from now on there will be a new Soul Food Radio Show every 2 weeks.

We start off the first session with Sweet Charles and his version of the Sam And Dave classic Soul Man. Sweet Charles Sherrell was the bass player for James Brown and played on many classic tunes. In 1974 he released his now sought after first solo album called For Sweet People on JB's People Record Label.

Next up is J.R. Bailey with the title track from his Just Me 'N You album released in 1975. Although the album wasn't a commercial success, it's a great album that has been reissued not long ago. Marvin Gaye meets Donny Hathaway.

Is It Him Or Me is a digger's dream with the nice open break at the beginning. It's the title track of Jackie Jackson's 1973 album, released on Motown. Jackie was one of the Jackson 5 and the majority of the album was produced by The Corporation Production Team.

Timmy Thomas is mostly known for his smash hit called Why Can't We Live Together. This track was released as a 45 on Glades in 1975 and has been sampled by Kool G Rap and DJ Polo for Truly Yours and was also included in the now Infamous Brainfreeze Mix.

The next track comes from an album i recently discovered. Nat King Cole's Re:Generations is in my opinion one of the better remix albums out there. Cut Chemist does his thing and brings Nat King Cole into the 21st Century. Unfortunately not many people seem to know about this album.

Smoove And Turrell released their first album called Antique Soul this year. The album is one of the best Soul releases i heard in years. Smoove is one of the best Dj's around, he always manages to make the people dance. I urge you to check out this album, it's a killer.

The 4 track era Box Set is a collection of tracks coming from a fascinating period for DJ Shadow, 1990 to 1992, where he was an aspiring producer in his late teens trying to get his foot in the door. The 3 cd set features some of his early mixes for the KMEL radio station and loads of unreleased remixes like Eric B. And Rakim's Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em.

The formula is as simple as that: Take two songs, blend them and what you'll get is a Classic. Sounds easy doesn't it. That's exactly what Dert, Beatmaker and Producer, did. He used samples from José Gonzalez, used Common's Go acappella and this is the result. Sounds better than the original version in my opinion.

Arts The Beatdoctor is one of the producers that always gets compared with artists such as DJ Shadow, Krush and RJD2 because of his atmospheric and cinematic hip-hop beats. But the 23 year old Beatmaker is more than just a clone, delivering one of the best sample based albums called Transitions.

Next up it's Dert again, this time with an Untitled beat from his West Side Of The Moon beat tape where he uses samples from Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon.

The good thing about being a blogger is that you receive tons of free music. Barcelona's beatmaking duo Debilorithmicos sent me their EP called Dimarts I Dijous a few weeks ago and this is a track taken from that EP. Released a few months ago, the vinyl is sold-out but you can still download the EP on the Bandcamp Site and pay as much as you like.

Termanology made a lot of noise with his DJ Premier produced single called Watch How It Go Down released in 2006. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, he released one album called Politics As Usual and a few mixtapes including a J Dilla Tribute called If Heaven Was A Mile Away. Termanology spittin 100 Bars over J Dilla's Let The Dollar Circulate Beat, what else do you need?

One of the rarest J Dilla Remixes is this version of D'Angelo's Me And Those Dreamin Eyes Of Mine. Released on a mega rare EP by Dilla's close friend House Shoes, this remix is better than the original. Makes you realise what a brilliant producer Dilla was.

Frankenstein is a Canadian MC and producer who made some noise in the 90's, before suddenly disappearing from the scene. This remix was released in 1997 on a white label album called Live From New York. Fakin' Jax is taken from InI's Center Of Attention album which saw a proper release on BBE in 2006. Originally recorded in 1995, the album was never released because of issues over the ownership of the Master-Tapes and bootlegging.

Lessons Of Today is taken from Rah Digga's debut album released in 1999. It became quiet after she parted ways with Busta Rhymes' Flipmode Squad. DJ Premier brings the heat as usual.

Back Again. Talib Kweli And Hi-Tek are back and if their new album can keep the standard of this track it will be a classic just like their first album. A great vibe, a great hook, not too cheesy, and Talib and Hi-Tek at their best.

Dave Notti has released two fantastic Beat Tapes and i always wonder why there are no MC's knocking down his door to work with him. Quality Beats and a nice way to end this first Soul Food Radio Show.

Stay tuned...
